Rwanda Day 2024 highlights the nation's remarkable 30 year progress

Rwanda Day 2024 that was held in DC, marked a pivotal moment in the nation's journey towards prosperity and global engagement. More than 13,000 Rwandans and friends of Rwanda gathered to hear from President Paul Kagame and panelists covering healthcare, entertainment and the country's 30 year progress. Here's a recap of the key highlights from this much-anticipated event:

Diplomacy:

Over the past three decades, Rwanda has significantly expanded its diplomatic reach, boasting 47 diplomatic offices worldwide, the newest embassy and first in Latin America just opened in Brazil. With 45 diplomatic missions hosted in Rwanda, and a robust peacekeeping presence comprising almost 6000 peacekeepers, Rwanda stands as a prominent player in global diplomacy. Collaborations such as the partnership with the United Kingdom to address migration crises demonstrate Rwanda's commitment.

"We are much better than 30 years ago. We just have to keep going...You can go far and fast at the same time. That's what our situation compels us to do and we must think like that." ~President Paul Kagame

Economic Development:

Rwanda's commitment to combating human trafficking and fostering economic development has yielded remarkable results. The nation has welcomed over 3000 refugees from Libya and played a pivotal role in launching the African Continental Free Trade Agreement, the largest of its kind in the world. Strategic partnerships with organizations like the Global Fund for AIDS Development in Africa, FIFA Development Office and the Susan Buffet Foundation underscore Rwanda's position as a hub for economic innovation and development.

“Rwanda has done more than most African countries and to take charge of its own destiny. For other African countries it's been 60 years or more. Rwandans have been self-determining and built their institution around their own culture and tradition.” ~Amb. Jendayi Frazer

Healthcare:

Rwanda's healthcare achievements are nothing short of extraordinary. Through initiatives like the 4x4 program, which aims to quadrupled the number of healthcare workers in just four years, Rwanda has emerged as a global leader in healthcare delivery and development. With 96% of the population covered by health insurance and significant advancements in vaccination programs and medical infrastructure, Rwanda has achieved unprecedented declines in mortality rates and increased life expectancy by 20 years in the last two decades. Cutting-edge advancements such as the first mRNA plant built by BioNTech in Rwanda demonstrate the nation's commitment to innovation and accessibility in healthcare.

Sports and Entertainment

The influence of African music and sports on the global stage was palpable during Rwanda Day 2024. Notable collaborations, such as Melody teaming up with Shaggy on the hit song "When She's Around," showcased the fusion of talent and creativity emanating from the continent. Inema Art, renowned for its captivating artwork, further underscored Africa's cultural richness by selling pieces for as much as $10,000.

Rwanda's commitment to fostering a vibrant entertainment landscape is exemplified by its state-of-the-art facilities, including the BK Arena and the Kigali Convention Center. These venues have not only played host to a myriad of events but have also generated employment opportunities, contributing to the socio-economic growth of the region.

In the realm of sports and despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, Rwanda's stringent protocols ensured the successful hosting of all Basketball African League (BAL) games, including playoffs and finals, for the past three seasons. Bruce Melody's creation of the theme song "Game On" for the BAL epitomizes the spirit of collaboration and innovation driving the continent's sporting landscape forward.

The investments in sports and entertainment infrastructure not only enrich the cultural fabric of Rwanda but also position the nation as a hub for creativity, talent, and innovation on the global stage.

"In Africa, we treat sport as leisure and we haven’t seen it as a business. Competition is great but I know what investments are made in sport and entertainment." ~Masai Ujiri

In conclusion, Rwanda Day 2024 showcased the nation's remarkable progress across various sectors, from diplomacy and economic development to healthcare and entertainment. As Rwanda continues to chart its path forward, it does so with a steadfast commitment to self-determination, innovation, and inclusive growth.
